Vuelta a Espana 2017 : Stage 19 – Thomas de Gendt with a breakaway win

This stage was always going to fizz with attackity excitement, and the man popping the Cava was none other than the rider with THE BEST nose for a breakaway Thomas de Gendt. The Belgian beast joined a star-studded break at the start, was alert to every move that went on a day full of climbs and descents, and finished it off with the sprint of his LIFE to complete his Grand Tour hat-trick. That makes four Vuelta victories to Lotto-Soudal. Behind, there was no change on GC, although the Sky train had to work hard to bring back yet another Alberto Contador attack!

Vuelta a Espana 2017 : Stage 18 – Sander Armee springs surprise on Alto de Santo

Another day, another victory from a break, another maiden WorldTour victory this time for Sander Armee who clinically despatched his break-mates to solo across the finish line atop Alto de Santo – chapeau! Meanwhile, 10 minutes down the road, numerous outbreaks of attackiness only resulted in race leader Chris Froome further consolidating his advantage.

Vuelta a Espana 2017 : Stage 17 – Denifl delivers a dream on Los Machucos

I don’t think many people expected the breakaway to take the glory today but Stefan Denifl didn’t get that memo. The Austrian rode away from his companions on the insanely steep and rutted road to the summit of Los Machucos, holding off a sparkling, dancing Alberto Contador by 28secs to deliver Aqua Blue their first Grand Tour victory on their debut. Behind them the race exploded in the shrouding mist with a suffering Chris Froome ceding time to most of his rivals but retaining the leader’s jersey.
