Sky dominated the 38th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, as three of their riders won stages and they held the yellow jersey for all but the opening day. Australian Richie Porte, formerly of Saxo Bank, won the queen stage on Friday to move into the overall lead and comfortably defended his position to register his first major stage race victory.
Continuing our series on cycling families, we’re turning our attention to the Dutch Kreder brothers – Michel and younger brother Raymond – who last week hit the headlines for all the right reasons: “Kreder brothers catapulted into contention at Tour Mediterraneen”. Yes, they’re riding for the same team, Garmin-Barracuda. Raymond joined his older brother Michel at the start of this season and already they’re turning heads.
Hoping for warmer weather, the riders head for southern Portugal and the 38th edition of the Volta ao Algarve. It starts today (Wednesday 15th February) and takes place over five days, finishing on Sunday. The race organisers claim it’s a varied but balanced route providing something for everyone.
