It was all change for the GC as the break-of-the-day took all the glory on Stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia. Fausto Masnada (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec), the strongest of the Italian duo left out front, took the stage winning honours. While second-placed UAE-Team Emirates’ Valerio Conti romped straight into the maglia rosa. The top ten positions on GC are all held by members of the 13-man breakaway as Jumbo-Visma decided not to chase after team leader Primoz Roglic was involved in a crash early in the stage.
The organisers said the second week of the Vuelta would be the toughest, and boy they were right. From the Alto del Naranco and La Covadonga to the fearsome queen stage finishing atop L’Aubisque, the peloton have done nothing but face climb after climb after climb …
Yet another win from a break! Yet another maiden grand tour victory by a young rider. Valerio Conti attacked from the day’s break and quickly disappeared from view along the winding roads to solo across the line almost a minute ahead of his break mates, runner-up Danilo Wyss and third-placed Sergey Lagutin. The peloton finally rolled in a record-breaking 33:56 down but there were no changes on GC: Nairo Quintana (Movistar) remains in the lead.
