Tour de France 2020 : Stage 2 – Alaphilippe fires it up for an emotional stage win

One of the hands-down favourites for the stage and the next maillot jaune in Stage 2 of the 2020 Tour de France was Julian Alaphilippe. The finish suited him, the yellow jersey was on the shoulders of a sprinter so it was up for grabs, who could bet against him? But being the favourite means being watched and being watched means you have to pick your moment to pounce and hope you catch people by surprise. Tour de France 2020 : Stage 1 – Kristoff storms to a rain-soaked sprint victory

It was the first stage of the 2020 Tour de France in sunny Nice. Except it wasn’t sunny – heavy rain turned the roads as slippery as ice and riders went down left, right and centre. A rider-led neutralisation of the final descent was the calm before a scrappy sprint finish, won in storming style by UAE Emirates’ Alexandre Kristoff, putting him in yellow for the first time in his career. But that was almost the least surprising thing about the stage.
