Trying to work through the thousands of great tweets from the first three stages of this year’s Tour de France has been like trying to sort bikes and bodies after the whole peloton goes down. I’ve done my best, picking up bits here and there to make a snapshot of the weekend, but they’re definitely not in chronological order. So just think of it as you’re the mechanic trying to make sense of the parts you have in front of you! Let’s get going!
Pink pink pink … it’s May and the Giro d’Italia has started on schedule. Phew! And need I say, the cycling fans were afroth with excitement – which means great tweets! Let us begin as we mean to go on … it’s GIRO TWEETS OF THE WEEK!
Tim Merlier held his speed and his nerve in a chaotic sprint to give Giro debutantes Alpecin-Fenix their first podium, and claim his first GT victory and the GORGEOUS maglia ciclamino. The ‘fastest man in Belgium’ screamed to the front with 250m to go, holding off Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka ASSOS) and Cofidis’ Elia Viviani who had to settle for second and third respectively. Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) retains the pink jersey, so the only other change in GC is the rise of Remco Evenepoel as he grabbed two seconds to put him on the same time as Deceuninck QuickStep teammate Joao Almeida. Looks like Patrick Lefevre’s comment of leaving this tussle to be settled on the road is coming true.
