A remarkable ride from the break-of-the day saw Lotto Soudal’s Matthew Holmes take his first WorldTour victory on Willunga Hill. Second place was more than enough for Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) to claim the ochre jersey for the second time in his career, rampaging away from the rest of the field and a fading overnight leader Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott).
Giacomo Nizzolo provided NTT Pro Cycling with their first victory after a feisty day of racing. The Italian sprinter was joined on the podium by fellow countryman Simoni Consonii (Cofidis) with Sam Bennett (Deceuninck Quickstep) in third. Daryl Impey finally gets to wear the ochre jersey thanks to some slick teamwork by Mitchelton-Scott in the battle for bonifications.
Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) rocketed past Deceuninck-Quickstep’s Sam Bennett to grab is second stage victory at the Tour Down Under. Richie Porte retains the ochre jersey for Trek-Segafredo but his lead is cut in half to three seconds as Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) grabbed time at both intermediate sprints.
