While the riders are enjoying their rest day in Verona, here at VeloVoices Towers I’ve been picking the bones out of the first three days of action in the 2012 Giro d’Italia. Having looked at Taylor Phinney‘s big adventure so far and the early winners and losers, here’s the second part of my analysis which focuses on the glorious madness of the sprints and remembering the loss of one of the sport’s true champions.
Stage profile: Another flat stage, ending in a few circuits around Horsens set up perfectly for another bunch sprint.
Top three: 1. Matt Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) 2. J J Haedo (Saxo Bank) 3. Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Barracuda).
The 2012 UCI America Tour continues its march across South America with the sixth edition of the Tour de San Luis. The seven-stage race starts tomorrow (Monday) January with a glittering cast, including 2010 winner Vincenzo Nibali, Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador, the evergreen Levi Leipheimer and Classics men Tom Boonen, Sylvain Chavanel and Pippo Pozzato all seeking some action in the warm Argentinian sunshine. [Although, predictably, stormy weather is forecast for Monday – Ed.]
