September is the last really full month of the season. There is the bulk of the Vuelta a Espana still to enjoy, of course, but besides that we have the Road World Championships and a further three WorldTour events. There will be plenty of riders motivated by a shot at a rainbow jersey, not to mention those yet to secure a contract for 2014, who will be keen to catch the eye in these closing weeks of the season.
Stage 5: Sober to Lago de Sanabria, 168.4km
Finally a stage for the sprinters, and after his team laid the groundwork Michael ‘Bling’ Matthews (Orica GreenEDGE) launched his sprint with 200 metres to go and held off Maximiliano Ariel Richeze (Lampre-Merida) and Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) on the slight uphill ramp to the finish. Yesterday the 22-year-old was on the podium, today he was astride it claiming his first grand tour victory in some style.
Stage 4: Lalin / a Estrada to Fisterra, 186.4km
On a parcours suited to the classics stars, Fleche Wallonne winner Dani Moreno romped home at Fisterra on the etapa fin del mundo – the stage to the end of the world. He was hotly pursued to the line by King of the Cobbles Fabian Cancellara, whose charge to the line inadvertently caused a split in the bunch which cost RadioShack teammate Chris Horner the red jersey he had earned only yesterday.
