Giro 2017 Stage 21:Double Dutch party as Van Emden and Dumoulin rock Milan

The Giro that has served up a thriller of Grand Tour gave us one more last-gasp, clock-watching, stab of excitement. Only 53secs separated the top four on GC. Fastest man on the day was LottoNL-Jumbo’s Jos Van Emden, who blistered around the 29.3km course in 33:08mins and spent most of the race in the hotseat. The man who ran him closest was fellow countryman Tom Dumoulin, who kept his cool and powered his way from fourth overall right to the top step of the Giro podium. A pink-booted Nairo Quintana held on for 2nd with Vincenzo Nibali delighting home fans with third place.

Giro stage 19: Quintana extends lead with TT win

Stage 19: Bassano del Grappa to Monte Grappa, 26.8km individual time trial

There were no surprises in the Giro’s tortuous mountain time trial, with Nairo Quintana and his magnificent shin-length pink overshoes dancing their way to the summit finish on Monte Grappa with the fastest time. With his general classification lead stretched to over three minutes, it’d take a calamitous collapse for the Colombian to lose the maglia rosa from here.
