Oh my goodness, but it has been a week of racing. And that means it was quite a week swimming in the Twitterstream. We have the fascination which was the Ronde, the Giro that finally caught fire and a lot of fun in the gruppetto. Jump in!
Filippo Ganna, glimmering in rainbow bands atop his golden bike as World Time Trial Champion, rocketed into hat-trick territory on Stage 14 of this Giro d’Italia. The 24-year-old Ineos rider continued an all-star rise to fame, dominating all others on the rolling 34km course between Conegliano to Valdobbiadene. Aussie, and fellow Ineos teammate, Rohan Dennis finished second at 26 seconds. American and UAE rider Brandon McNulty went quickest amongst the GC favourites to finish third. While the GC Top 10 shifted somewhat, no dramatic changes occurred as Joao Almeida continues his maglia rosa run.
I came to the realization today that we are at the end of the first week of October, and the Giro d’Italia has only just begun. Why it took me until Stage 5 to reach this level of consciousness, I do not know. While odd, today’s wet, misty stage provided an exemplary level of spookiness that fits this month oh so well. Proving to be INEOS Grenadiers’ top rider this season, Filippo Ganna asserted himself as best of the breakaway and soloed to his second stage in five days. The general classification remains largely unchanged after race leader João Almeida finished with the favourites and snagged four bonus seconds at the line.
