The 2012 UCI America Tour continues its march across South America with the sixth edition of the Tour de San Luis. The seven-stage race starts tomorrow (Monday) January with a glittering cast, including 2010 winner Vincenzo Nibali, Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador, the evergreen Levi Leipheimer and Classics men Tom Boonen, Sylvain Chavanel and Pippo Pozzato all seeking some action in the warm Argentinian sunshine. [Although, predictably, stormy weather is forecast for Monday – Ed.]
You could be forgiven for thinking the race leader’s ochre jersey is something of a hot potato. Having passed from Andre Greipel to BMC’s Martin Kohler on stage two, the powerful German sprinter reclaimed it with victory in stage three, only to hand it back to the Swiss rider the following day, who then relinquished it in turn to GreenEDGE’s Simon Gerrans. The Aussie will now defend the jersey in tomorrow’s final stage in the heart of Adelaide.
The opening two stages of the Tour Down Under went largely as expected. Andre Greipel won a crash-marred sprint on stage one, while stage two saw a successful breakaway delight the local fans, as UniSA-Australia’s William Clarke came home alone. However, it was BMC’s Martin Kohler, thanks to bonuses gained in breaks on both days, who will defend the leader’s ochre jersey going into tomorrow’s third stage.
