It started off very slowly and ended up very wet. Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia provided a good few talking points but it waited until the last ten minutes to serve them up. The remnants of the day’s break tried hard to hold on to their advantage but a huge surge from Movistar’s Richard Carapaz put an end to their hopes. The Ecuadorian took the stage win in style, his country’s first ever Giro victory. Simon Yates came through safely to stay in pink another day but Chris Froome had a bit of a skittish ‘mare.
The slopes of Mount Etna hosted the first summit finish of this year’s Giro d’Italia and it really shook things up with an intriguing and dramatic day of racing. Mitchelton-Scott dominated with Esteban Chaves winning the stage, coming across the finish line just in front of his teammate Simon Yates, who relieved Rohan Dennis of the maglia rosa.
The Tour de Yorkshire had four days of great weather and good racing. By any measure it has turned into a success but the race leaves Euan a little cold and has him asking: How the hell don’t I love the Tour of Yorkshire?
