Tour Moments of Joy: Stage 20 – Thibaut’s Final Magnificent Stomp at Le Tour

Stage 20. The last mountain stage of the last Tour de France Thibaut Pinot will ride was utterly exuberant. Sure there was no fairy tale, stage winning ending but we got a show of magnificent, imperious stomping as Tibo rode solo on his home climb in front of a wall of adoring fans. I can’t think of a more fitting moment of joy.

It was always going to be an emotional day.

One last hurrah from the minute he attacked to bridge to the break to his attack on Le Petite Ballon, his training climb.

There’s a corner on this climb, named for Pinot – Google knows!

Fans lined every metre of this climb. Spurred into a joyous wall of sound by friend and former Groupama-FDJ Teammate Arthur Vichot. I was worried it would get unruly or dangerous. But the people were respectful, not only for their hero but to all the riders.

Imagine riding through this wall of pure love and admiration.

He was eventually caught by the GC group but that hardly matters.

Finishing here is just incredible… I still close a chapter of my book tonight, and it’s more touching than I imagined. I wanted to experience these last emotions, and I did experience them today. They will remain etched forever.

Of course the post race interview was interrupted by team boss Marc Madiot, his emotions so clear to see as always. I have lost count of the times these two have touched my heart.

Loved this… his lines are love hearts etched on our hearts

I know there will be time later to try and sum up what being a fan of this rider has meant to me. But that time is not now, now I want to savour the joy of this Tour farewell. What style, what grit, what panache and how very Thibaut to the end.

Can’t wait to spot him in years to come.
