Tour de France 2022 : Stage 11 – Jumbo break Pogacar, Vingegaard takes yellow

With every stage, this Tour de France just gets crazier and more thrilling … and today’s Stage 11 was no exception. In fact, it beat the other stages in the crazy, thrilling stakes hands down. It had a beautiful start (Lacets de Montvernier), iconic climbs (Col du Telegraphé, Col du Galibier), and an HC summit finish (Col du Granon). It also had 8 Jumbo-Visma riders who were willing to risk it all … then risk it again … then risk it again … until they cracked the rider everyone assumed was uncrackable, Tadej Pogacar. By the end of the exhausting stage, Jonas Vingegaard was in yellow, Romain Bardet had moved from 7th place to 2nd overall, and Pogacar had dropped to third, 2.22 behind the leader. Yes. It was a hell of a stage.

Jumbo’s madcap plan

I’ve been trying to write this for about two hours now and just can’t work out how to do it. So I will say that you should watch the entire stage or at least from the the midle of the Telegraphe to the finish – because it is nearly impossible to capture exactly what happened in words. I will, however, give you tantalising tidbits from the stage, kind of in order, but without a lot of explanation, because that’s how I remember it.

Break or be broken

The Wout Express

The Wout Express (which picked up Roglic) catches the yellow jersey group by surprise. Possibly my favourite part of the whole race.

Pog just kickin’ back, not a care in the world

The reactions

Wout’s shout as Jonas is trying to control his emotions in the post-stage interview.
