FINAL KM: Volta ao Algarve St 2; Ruta del Sol St 2.

A brace of searing solo attacks to make any cycling fan cheer.

Stage 2, Volta ao Algarve em BicicletaIa

Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck Quickstep) launched a devastating attack in the final 300m of the 7.5km Alto de Fóia and put seconds into the climber group behind him. Only BORA-hansgrohe’s Max Schachmann could get close, the German finishing on the same time. Dan Martin (UAE-Team Emirates) rounded out the podium 2 seconds further back. The race lead remains with the Quicksteppers passing from Fabio Jakobsen to Remco.

I don’t know what else to say about Remco Evenepoel except WOW.

Tears at the finish line

Look how close Schachmann came

We love when Geschke attacks

It was all going to plan for Team Ineos with 17.5km to go, but one by one all three GC men dropped away. First Rohan Dennis, then Geraint Thomas – while the taem were putting pressure on at the front for Michal Kwiatkowski– and finally the Pole himself. Time to reset and try again, it is only February.

Stage 2 ,Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol

A simply brilliant late attack by Gonzalo Serrano brought his first ever professional victory and Caja-Rural’s first of the season. The Spaniard caught the WorldTour teams on the hop, although they really should have expected it given his panache and polka dots  at the Volta Valenciana earlier in February. Race leader Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) finished sixth and retains the jersey.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the cheek of this win. Sublime timing and the power to take it to the line. I will admit to holding my breath as that 10% incline bit hard.  Here him called home by Alberto Contador. Marvellous.

Translated from the team report in the tweet above…

“It was a day that suited me very well. Yesterday I raised my foot thinking about today’s stage, since it was the route that best suited my characteristics and we had studied it in detail. Normally it does not come out but today luckily we have finished it perfectly.I think I’m not aware yet, I don’t believe it. My first victory as a professional and in a lap of the level of Andalusia. It is difficult to assimilate.
