Vuelta Tweets of the Week : Flags and fans and fanciful things

We’re looking back on the second week of racing in the Vuelta 2019 with a quick trawl through the Twitterstream. We have Philippe Gilbert‘s Flanders-style win, Jakob Fuglsang‘s first GT victory, young’uns Tadej Pogacar and Sepp Kuss, ideas for our new mystery series starring Tosh Van Der Sande (PI), and baby animals hitching a ride with Thibaut Pinot.

Flanders for a day

It was the day for one of the sport’s legends. And with fans and flags reminiscent of a Sunday in Flanders, who could possibly deny Philippe Gilbert his 10th grand tour stage win? No one. That’s who.

And, much like Flanders, it starts very young for cycling fans in the Basque country

‘We can talk, maybe, after the Worlds’ … sounds like PhilGil is looking for another stint in the rainbows. I wouldn’t put it past him!

It’s Cava-time!

A palmares most riders would give their eye-teeth for and few have surpassed

And then there’s Pogacar

And another young’un … Sep Kuss

Looks like Jumbo-Visma is now the team that develops the next generation of American riders

In the much-anticipated mystery series starring Tosh Van Der Sande (PI), Dolph Kuss will be the criminal mastermind who thinks best on skis – Van Der Sande’s greatest nemesis! Where’s my IrnBru, I’m ready to write!!!!!

Guerreiro says he can be happy with his result, but his face and his eyes don’t say that. When you get thisclose to winning …

But then there was this as well … they were riding together, Guerreiro got second, GH got third. Seems Tao didn’t like that but we’re not sure why and apparently neither does Guerreiro.

And this bird can sing

It was a popular win on Stage 16 – Jakob Fuglsang *finally* wins an individual stage in a grand tour. May it be the first of many!

One of the most endearing interviews ever. “I have already traveled 30 kilometers with kittens in my cycling jersey!” Kittens! In Pinot’s jersey! As he rides to find them an affectionate home! My heart is on fire!!!

Step back to leap higher … we can’t wait to see Thibaut – kittens or no kittens – next season
