The first road stage delivered an attacking finale and yet another victory for Astana.
Tour de Romandie Stage 1: Fribourg to Delémont, 166.6km
The peloton brought Omar Fraile to heel on his first attack but he would not be denied, keeping his cool in the frantic run to the line to take his second stage win of the year and bring Astana’s tally to 13. The Basque rider kicked early and had enough in the tank to hold off Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) – the last fast man standing on the tough finishing circuit. Rui Costa (UAE-Emirates) rounded out the podium. Michael Matthews was dropped on the last climb and the race lead passes to LottoNL-Jumbo’s Primoz Roglic on countback from Rohan Dennis (BMC) with Geraint Thomas, the first of 4 Sky riders in the top 10, at +0.04secs
