Tour of Oman: the desert race with something for everyone – even the climbers! However, stage 1 was all about the fast men.
Stage 1: Al Sawadi Beach to Naseem Park, 176.5km
Alexander Kristoff and his Katusha-Alpecin team know how to win at Naseem Park. They did it in 2016 and they repeated it again at this year’s edition. The Norwegian opened his sprint with 150m to go and muscled through the headwind as though it was a whispering desert zephyr. Kristian Sbaragli (Dimension Data) placed second. Bahrain Merida’s Sonny Colbrelli rounded out the podium, despite having a puncture just as the break were caught with 10km to go. One fast man absent from the sharp end was Quick Step Floor’s Tom Boonen who was caught in a crash in the final kilometre.
There was a collective Twitter wail of #Nooooooo when this news came through. Fortunately the team report that Tornado Tom is well enough to be on the start line tomorrow.
