Giro d’Italia 2016 : Stage 14 – Chaves wins the Queen stage

It was the Queen stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia – 210km, 5 mountain passes and a nasty kick at the finish. We had Movistar meltdowns, a Shark with a damp squib, Dutch derring-do and a little kangaroo that could. Orica-GreenEDGE’s Esteban Chaves nipped out from behind Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Georg Preidler (Giant-Alpecin) to take the stage win with long-suffering breakaway rider Darwin Atapuma (BMC) fading in the last 100m. Final KM: Amgen Tour of California St6, ATOC Women St2

Race of truth day at California; team variety for the women and solo efforts for the men. No one had TT bikes so it was road bikes and tri-bars galore. It was windy around the Johnny Cash homeland at Folsom, but that didn’t stop the fast times rolling. Lets get right down among the disc wheels.
