Final KM: Amgen Tour of California Stage 3

Queen stage at the Tour of California. We had attacks galore. We had cheerleading led by the Pope, a chicken and an inflatable cookie, AND we had a rather wonderful Etixx-Quick Step double up.  Intrigued? Read on…

Tour of California, Stage 3, Thousand Oaks to Gibraltar, 167.5km

What a final climb the Gibraltar Road turned out to be. Quickstepper Julian Alaphilippe flew out of the chasing pack to catch lone leader Peter Stetina (Trek-Segafredo) at the flamme rouge. Then just kept dancing away to repeat his 2015 Queen stage victory and grab the leader’s jersey. Stetina finished second on the day with George Bennett (LottoNL_Jumbo) rounding out the podium.  The same three rider now top the GC with Alaphilippe holding 19secs on Stetina and 31secs over Bennett. How marvellous to see all three of them back on top of their game.

Highlights…

The Pope, a chicken and a giant inflatable cookie – It’s was all going on at Gibraltar!

Lot of love for the Axeon dudes

Axeon Hagens Berman are on fire. The Most Courageous Rider’s jersey passed from Will Barta to Greg Daniel after his last-man-standing-from-the-break-of-the-day heroics. Youngest rider in the race Nielsen Powless living up to his name with a stupendous solo ride to claim the Young Rider’s jersey. Just 19 years old and super, super smooth on the bike.
