Ahh! Those wide roads, the sunshine, the harum-scarum sprints with the crit-style corners. All the things we know and love about the Amgen Tour of California.
Tour of California, San Diego to San Diego, 175km
Another thing we love about Tour of California is Tinkoff’s Peter Sagan in the leader’s yellow jersey, and that’s exactly what we got after the opening stage. It all got a little nervy as the sprint trains revved it up in the final kilometres. Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Cannondale’s Wouter Wippert looked to have it in the bag as the finish line came into sight, when out of the chaos came the majestic, lion-maned, rainbow clad warrior. Hopping from wheel to wheel then unleashing a fearsome turn of speed and a bike throw to leave Wippert in second and young Groenewegen with third.
