Final KM: Tour de Romandie St5, Tour de Yorkshire St3

It was podium day at the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Yorkshire and both races produced something special on the last stage. Let’s get right down to it.

Tour de Romandie, Stage 5, Ollon to Geneva 177.4km

Mr Romandie a.k.a Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEDGE) finally got his stage victory at his favourite race. Part of a 10 man super break that made it all the way to the line, he held his nerve and his power as chaos reigned to take win number 6. Fellow breakaway riders Movistarlet Andrey Amador  and Wilko Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo) placed second and third. The GC podium remained unchanged with Nairo Quintana 19secs ahead of FDJ’s Thibaut Pinot and 23secs ahead on team mate Ion Izagirre. Alba goes home with the points jersey, Lotto-Soudal’s Sander Armee‘s superb breakaway work earns him the KOM, and Pierre Latour (Ag2r-la Mondiale) is best young rider. Movistar take home the best team prize.

Will we see this again in the summer I wonder? (GC podium, Ion Izagirre missing as he was caught in crash in last kilometre)

Tour de Yorkshire St3, Middlesborogh to Scarborough, 198km

Team Sky made the race tough over the climbs and through the crosswinds. Chasing the break and whittling the peloton down until just 5 riders were left to battle it out for overall victory with 7km and one climb to go. Nicholas Roche (Sky) attacked but Direct Energie’s talisman Thomas Voeckler got back to him. Under the flamme rouge they went with just 10secs on the chasers. Tommy V maneuvered Roche to the front and then shot past him when he wasn’t looking to grab a hugely popular stage win and the overall title. Adam Yates sprinted to third on the stage. Roche and brilliant neo-pro Anthony Turgis (Cofidis) rounded out the GC podium. Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) retained the points jersey while Nathan Haas (Dimension Data) claimed the Mountains title. Best team were Sky.
