The Tour de Yorkshire pelotons served up a Double Dutch sprint fest in Doncaster, although technical issues left us with nowt but tantalising glimpses of the action. Over in Switzerland we were treated to a scintillating, if soggy, Tour de Romandie queen stage.
Tour de Romandie, Stage 4, Conthey to Villars-s/Ollon, 172.7km
Chris Froome (Sky) attacked with 40km to go, dropped his breakaway companion Tejay van Garderen (BMC) with 3km to go, and soloed in for a fantastic win atop the Barboleusaz. Movistar’s Ion Izagirre led the elite group over the line for second. Third placed Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) tried several times to drop Movistar’s Nairo Quintana on the last ascent, but the Colombian and his team countered them all to retain the GC lead by 19secs over Tibbles.
Winning…
Movistarlets are GO…
#ArgoSunGod relaxing and hoping for a sprint tomorrow…
Highlights…
Tour de Yorkshire St2 and Women’s Tour de Yorkshire Race, Otley to Doncaster, 135.5km
Technical problems might have taken the live action from our screens, but it didn’t stop the excitement and superb racing on the roads in Yorkshire. Run over exactly the same parcours, both events came down to a fast finish. Kirsten Wild (Hitec Products) demonstrated exactly why she’s the sprint queen at the women’s race. Powering away from Wiggle High5’s Lucy Garnier and Floortje Mackaij (Liv-Plantur) for a super win. There was more Dutch sprint success at the men’s stage. Sky’s Danny van Poppel just pipped Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) with Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) rounding out the podium. Young Dylan retains the overall by 6secs from van Poppel going into the last stage.
Lot of love for home girl Lizzie…
