Yesterday was a big day in the mountains, both in the Giro and in California. And both stages were won by solo riders, with pressure on the GC leaders behind ratcheting up. One leader added 2 seconds and kept his jersey, one lost his by 2 seconds. Here are your race highlights:
It was Movistar’s Benat Intxausti who zipped up and celebrated by himself as he crossed the line in the first summit finish of the Giro d’Italia. Behind him, Richie Porte, Fabio Aru, Rigoberto Uran and Alberto Contador were attacking each other almost the entire climb – but Baby Blackbird keeps the maglia rosa, extending his lead by 2 seconds, thanks to a cheeky nabbing of time on an early intermediate sprint.
Meanwhile, over on Mt Baldy, it was the new star in the Etixx firmament, Julian Alaphilippe, who took the race to the pre-stage favourite, Sky’s Sergio Henao, and scored an impressive solo victory. Even more impressive was the fact that Peter Sagan, in the yellow jersey, dug deep and finished sixth on the stage. Although he lost the lead to Alaphilippe, he limited the damage to 2 seconds. Today’s final stage won’t be a ceremonial parade – it’ll be all guns blazing.
My God, Ms. Fondue! Snow on the ground in California, in May?! I realize they’re up a mountain, but that’s pretty surprising. It looks like a fresh snowfall too!
Yep, a lot of snow! They had to change the TT route the other day because of inclement weather.
