Many, many years ago, when I was a kid, Santa put a pack of Western Gunfighters Top Trumps in my stocking, and it wasn’t long before I was hooked on comparing who had the highest price on their heads and who had the most kills. Imagine how thrilled I am to see that Procycling Trumps is going strong with, well, Procycling Top Trumps. Now I can see how El Pistolero squares up to his rivals! (See what I did there?)
You can pick up the 2014 edition (2015 is on the way) for £7.99, which features most of our favourite riders, including a dashing John Degenkolb and a quiffed-up Taylor Phinney, plus my own personal favourite, Moustachio Jose Serpa. As for the raging debate as to the optimum level of Eisel-beard, they’ve left him clean-shaven, so you can apply your own preferred amount of beardage with a black Sharpie.
There’s also an all-time ‘Legends’ pack (also £7.99), so if you’ve ever found yourself debating whether De Vlaeminck was better than Museeuw, or if Bugno could give Bartali a run for his money, this is for you. If nothing else, you’re sure to have a bit of fun debating the scoring of certain controversial figures. Given my personal introduction to the world of Top Trumps, I had to have a little chuckle at the inclusion of a certain Texan cowboy.
So go along and check out their site and follow them on Twitter. If you’re smitten with the fun artwork – and why wouldn’t you be? – you can even buy some pretty cool posters (A2 at £42), as well as cool pin badges (a set of 4 is £3.50). [Kitty: I want those pin badges!]
Oh, and if you’re feeling nostalgic, here is a picture of Western Gunfighters …
