To paraphrase Hillary Clinton, ‘It takes a Jens.’ While time trial powerhouses Tony Martin, Bradley Wiggins and the Sacred Haunches himself, Fabian Cancellara, have been talking about trying to break The Hour Record, Jens Voigt, in a swan song to beat all swan songs, just went out and did it. Jens set a new hour record of 51.110km on Thursday, 18 September 2014, just one day after his 43rd birthday. #HellYeah
I’ve put together a tiny selection of the thousands of Jens-related tweets from yesterday. Enjoy!
(Some of the picture captions come up small – just click on the picture and they’ll come up big and clear!)
BEFORE
A bowl of nails for breakfast. But surely Jens spreads nutella over those nails before he eats them!
DURING
Just one man and an oval of highly polished boards …
AFTER
Triumph. And cake. As it should be.
He might have just set a world’s record, but he’s still up for a party!
And he’s still signing autographs – as he always has throughout his career. Jens is a class act.
He was so excited – or exitet – that he starting to speak Fabianese!
Now to retirement
No one will mind if I have a little cry, will they? I think this tweet from Jens this morning is incredibly touching.
Love the bowl of nails for breakfast. Great ride from Jensie; strangely anti-climactic in that he broke the record (relatively easily) but that’s not to take anything away from the guy – great event, and sure to spark new interest once Wiggo, Cancellara et al get stuck in.
Forgive the self-promotion, but i write my own take on all this: http://ragtimecyclist.com/2014/09/22/the-hour-record-or-how-to-suffer-on-a-bike/
