In the penultimate stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia, a fan incident helped Mick Rogers take another solo summit finish on the brutal Monte Zoncolan, while Nairo Quintana finished with Rigoberto Uran on his wheel and ahead of all other rivals and is now one stage away from the pink confetti celebrations of his first grand tour win.
This year’s Giro concludes with a pair of stages which couldn’t be more different. First up today is the small matter of the Zoncolan. Then, once Sunday’s bunch sprint in Trieste is done and the pink confetti has settled, the guys can finally relax. It’ll be all over.
Stage 19: Bassano del Grappa to Monte Grappa, 26.8km individual time trial
There were no surprises in the Giro’s tortuous mountain time trial, with Nairo Quintana and his magnificent shin-length pink overshoes dancing their way to the summit finish on Monte Grappa with the fastest time. With his general classification lead stretched to over three minutes, it’d take a calamitous collapse for the Colombian to lose the maglia rosa from here.
