Now is your chance to make your voice heard in our second annual VeloVoices Awards. We’re asking you to select your personal favourites of 2013 across a variety of serious and not-so-serious categories. We’ll publish the final results in the run-up to Christmas.
On Sunday we ran our poll for the Least Likely to Happen in 2014 Award. Today it’s the turn of our nominations for the Funniest Moment of the Year Award.
Tim: Filippo Pozzato raising both arms in triumph at Roma Maxima after winning the sprint … for second place. He hadn’t realised that Ag2r’s Blel Kadri had already crossed the line 37 seconds ahead of him. At least he went on to claim a genuine victory at the GP Ouest France-Plouay later in the season.
Ant: Panda Charge! If it wasn’t such a dramatic climax to a race, I think we could almost have been forgiven for being too busy laughing at the sight of a giant panda chasing Dan Martin and Purito towards the finish line of Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Such an iconic image was this, that Martin has been stalked by a giant panda ever since.
Jack: I’m not entirely sure whether it’s funny or slightly disturbing, but Andrey Amador’s cable car antics get my vote.
Kathi: Orica-GreenEDGE‘s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ video with Eddy Merckx playing air guitar! Biggest fail of the year: AC/DC’s management forcing the team to take the video down because they didn’t grant permission for the song to be used. Geez, that video made AC/DC almost cool again, I don’t think a washed-up rock group should look a gift GreenEggs&Ham in the face like that!
Panache: Wiggo’s magical bike throw. Wiggins had a mechanical at a crucial moment in stage four of the Giro del Trentino. In frustration he jumped off his bike and pushed it away only to have it magically park itself. Surely the Force is strong with this one?
Sheree: Orica-GreenWEDGE – the GreenEDGE bus getting stuck under the finish-line gantry on the opening stage of the Tour de France. We can laugh now but it could have had more serious consequences were it not for a couple of quick-thinking individuals who succeeded in moving the bus. My favourite part of the incident was a photo of the Basque driver, on day one in the job, sitting in the bus with his face in his hands. You can’t make this stuff up!
Next: Kit of the Year.
We voted! Though my pick would be @petosagan and his green goatee at this year’s TDF!
