Stage 16: Graus to Sallent de Gallego, 146.8km, high mountains
Who’s left with anything in the tank after the last two stages? We shall see today as the peloton climbs from cat 3 to cat 2 to a summit finish on the cat 1 Aramon Formigal.
It’s the final day in the Pyrenees and although it’s not as testing as the two before it, there’s still a chance for a GC shake-up, although that might be more about cumulative fatigue and energy management than someone feeling frisky and riding away. The peloton will probably let a break go away again and see what happens before thinking about bringing it back for the final climb. As on the last two days, it’s a good opportunity for teams who haven’t much to show from their Vuelta so far.
Bit of trivia: This stage celebrates Fernando Escartin, one of Spain’s best climbers.
