We all knew he was never going to hold on for the win, but the oldest man in the peloton – he turns 42 in mid-September – remains one of the youngest at heart as he commanded his legs to shut up for perhaps the last time ever at the Tour. The day’s combativity prize was a given – maybe one day someone will recognise his career with a Lifetime Combativity Award?
