South African Daryl Impey has taken over from Orica-GreenEDGE teammate Simon Gerrans as race leader at the Tour de France. He’s the first African rider ever to wear the leader’s jersey at any of the three grand tours.

The 28-year-old is the reigning South African national time trial champion, winning the title for the second time back in February. He has previously won the overall at the Tour of Turkey (2009) – despite being pushed into a barrier by Theo Bos – as well as stages at the Tour of the Basque Country (two) and Bayern-Rundfahrt.
