Simon Gerrans is only the sixth Australian ever to pull on the yellow jersey. The other five are (in chronological order): Phil Anderson, Stuart O’Grady, Brad McGree, Robbie McEwen and Cadel Evans.
Anderson, a neighbour of Gerrans’ family, helped introduce Gerrans to professional cycling. There’s a great article about that story here.
Stage 4: Nice to Nice, 25km team time trial
On a stage where the smart money was on Sky, Garmin-Sharp and Omega Pharma-Quick Step, only OPQS came close to delivering that top spot. Close – 0.75 of a second close, the winning margin of Orica-GreenEDGE as they sprung a minor surprise in Nice.
