Today is the second anniversary of the death of Wouter Weylandt. The 26-year-old Leopard Trek rider died from injuries sustained in a crash on stage three of the 2011 Giro.
His death occurred the day before the first anniversary of his sole Giro victory, coincidentally also stage three. Here’s how he won that day. It’s how I choose to remember him.
Weylandt’s race number 108 was retired by the Giro’s organisers as a mark of respect. He is survived by his girlfriend An-Sophie De Graeve, who gave birth to their daughter Alizée in September 2011.
RIP Wouter. Never forgotten. Sempre con noi.
