VeloVoices Awards 2012: Least Likely to Happen in 2013

You’ve read the five of us discussing our thoughts on the 2012 season throughout the year. Now it’s time to make your voices heard as we open the voting for the inaugural VeloVoices Awards. Over ten days in ten categories – some serious, others less so – we’re asking you to select your choices of 2012. We’ll publish the final results in the run-up to Christmas. (Hopefully next year we’ll have a grand gala dinner in central London …)

Yesterday we revealed our shortlist for the Sartorial Elegance Award. Today it’s the turn of our (quickie) nominations for the Least Likely to Happen in 2013 Award:

Tim: The UCI providing any kind of rational explanation for denying Katusha its ProTeam licence, which means that Joaquim Rodriguez, the number one rider in the world in 2012, will not gain automatic entry to WorldTour races. (Or indeed the UCI providing any kind of rational explanation for anything.) It’s tantamount to throwing Manchester City out of the Premier League without reason. I suspect we’ll get some mealy-mouthed, self-serving justification in due course, but I fully expect any such communication to be full of dark insinuations about ‘sporting reasons’ which reveal nothing concrete.

Kitty: Jens Voigt saying “You know, I just didn’t fancy getting in the breakaway – I was tired and my legs hurt so I thought it was wiser to just coast through that stage.”

Panache: Regular followers will know I’m going to be travelling to France for the Tour next year, so I’d say the thing least likely to happen is me beating the lanterne rouge‘s time up Alpe d’Huez!

Sheree: Any sort of apology from Pat McQuaid or Hein Verbruggen about pretty much anything.

(Jack was too busy laughing to add a fifth nomination …)

Tomorrow we’ll unveil our shortlist for the Most Ridiculous Thing Said/Seen Award.
