Tweets of the Week: Kissing Cancellara, Vaughters on Nibbles, Ted King for the Tour and a Voigt of pain

Funny, cruel, odd, personal … you get it all on Twitter. Each week, we’ll have a rundown of some of our favourite tweets. Here are the tweets for the week ending 3rd June 2012.

The majority of this post is going to be a string of conversations that Jonathan Vaughters conducted around this week’s rumours around Liquigas, but as I always try to start Tweets with a picture, we’re going to go to a KittKat favourite … yep, it’s …

Kissing Cancellara

This picture cropped up in the week from a rabid Cancellara fan. What I wouldn’t give to be that yellow jersey.

Fabian has been working hard to get back into shape for the Tour de Suisse, Tour de France and, of course, the Olympics. This was what he said the other day about his training, in pure Fabianese.

I could do that! I could be your wake-up call, Fabian!!! But enough perving over Spartacus (well, in this column anyway). Let’s move on to something serious. [Thank God for that! – Ed.]

Nibbling at the edge of the Tour

Earlier this week, rumours were swirling around Liquigas: news came in that Vincenzo Nibali signed with Astana next year for a hefty chunk of change. CyclingRox pulls the trigger on the starting gun with her tweet in response to VeloNation’s announcement.

This brings out a conversation between Garmin’s Jonathan Vaughters and GreenEDGE&Ham’s Brian Nygaard, with contributions from InnerRing and Velocast, among others. I put this string together as conversations were going on all over the place, so it may be a bit disjointed but there’s meaty stuff in here.

LiquiSax, SaxoGas, GasBanks …

Another strand of that conversation was around the rumours of Liquigas merging with Saxo Bank to make yet another ‘super team’. Again, Vaughters takes the subject on with Inner Ring. (By the way, if anyone reading this is not following Jonathan Vaughters or The Inner Ring, you’re missing out on real insight into the sport.)

While the argument rages around Nibali and the super-teams merger, UCI Overlord had a brilliant idea.

Ted King for the Tour!

I, for one, think Ted King should go to the Tour. Hashtag it, people! #KingForTheTour! Speaking of Ted King …

Ted King does a MacGyver

Funny, resourceful, open and honest … I’ll say it again: Hashtag it, people! #KingfortheTour!!!!

I am Jens Voigt, I am Paaaaiiiinnnnnn

Jens Voigt – the peloton’s hardest hard-man – went out on a break in the Tour of Luxembourg, but unfortunately was reeled in by Lotto-Belisol 11km from the finish. Shame, but Jens had his revenge. They might have had to chase him down but he wasn’t going to get caught without a fight. A fight that meant PAIN!

During a later stage, where the peloton climbed everything in Luxembourg, Andre Greipel realised what the punishment was for taking the stage away from Jens a few days before.

Don’t know about you guys but I, for one, can’t wait for the Tour to start. Many stories to play out, much pain to dish out. #YellowFever takes hold!
